Nurse Extern Program
The Nurse Extern Program at Baptist Health System provides the opportunity for a smooth transition from Student Nurse to Registered Nurse. The Nurse Extern program consists of two levels which foster professional development.
Nurse Extern – Patient Care Technician (PCT)
This level is available to Professional Nursing Students who have completed their first fundamental clinical rotations. Employed Nurse Externs will have the opportunity to work with an RN Mentor to enhance their clinical development and hone their skills at the bedside under the supervision of a registered nurse.
Nurse Extern – Immersion
Once the final clinical rotation of nursing school begins, Nurse Externs are eligible to apply for a Nurse Extern Immersion position. The Nurse Extern Immersion position offers a wider view of the opportunities available to registered nurses.
During the immersion period, the Nurse Extern will explore the professional role of a Registered Nurse and how it integrates with the healthcare team. A majority of clinical areas will offer Nurse Extern opportunities and when possible, clinical rotations will be aligned to the Nurse Extern's immersion unit of choice.
The Nurse Extern will also commit to being hired as a novice nurse after graduation. Nurse Externs in the Immersion level will receive the first installment of their RN bonus once the letter of intent to work for Baptist Health System has been signed.
