The Nest at Baptist Health System is proud to offer lactation support to new mothers, with experienced nursing staff, certified lactation consultants and a dedicated lactation support center in San Antonio at North Central Baptist Hospital.

Certified Lactation Consultants

At North Central Baptist Hospital, new mothers have access to certified lactation consultants during their time in the hospital. International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) are specially trained health professionals who focus on lactation and related issues for families.

An IBCLC must complete a specialized five-year training program, 90 hours of lactation-specific education and up to 1,000 hours of hands-on clinical experience. Additionally, they must earn their recertification every five years and pass the International Board's examination every ten years.

The Mother's Milk First Outpatient Lactation Center

New mothers in San Antonio, regardless of where they delivered their baby, may visit the outpatient lactation center at North Central Baptist Hospital. At the outpatient center, families can discuss their breastfeeding goals and concerns with trained lactation consultants, practice breastfeeding sessions with hands-on guidance and receive newborn weight checks before and after feeding sessions to ensure nutritional needs are being met.

The Mother’s Milk First outpatient lactation center also offers:

  • Breast pumps for rent in hospital gift shop
  • Breast pump parts and accessories
  • Lactation consultations (by appointment only)
  • Weight checks
  • Bra fittings
  • Telephone assistance

At each of our maternity hospitals, our labor and delivery and postpartum nurses are experienced with lactation support.
